I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH A UNIQUE AND PERSONAL WALK WITH CHRIST
I grew up on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains in a small farming community. I always believed there was a god; but even after going to most of the denominational churches in my small town, I really didn't know who He was. Even though I had great-grandparents who were pastors, the zeal for God and the passing on of Christian beliefs was absent from my family. While my parents were in the midst of a divorce, I prayed that if God were real, He would make my dad stay. He didn't stay and my belief in God went too. I went on to live most of my young adult life doing what I thought was best, without consideration of God. This way of thinking is doomed for failure and in the midst of my disappointment, I knelt by my bed and again prayed that if God were real, He would come and help me...and He did!
He lifted the heaviness from my life and gave me hope. He placed within me a desire to read His word and seek his face; and for two years I pursued Him. Then my sister-in-law encouraged me to go to church. I really didn't feel the need, because He and I were doing great without church. In prayer time, however, He encouraged me to go; but with the admonition that "Pastors are only men, not perfect; and that I should check all preaching and teaching with the Word and with Him". Thus began my time "attending" church. I soon was baptized in water, which was an awesome visitation of His presence! I continued to hunger for God; I wanted to know Him more.
I then met a Christian sister, who seemed very different from other Christians and seemed to understand the Word in a deeper fashion. My pride was definitely crying out, "What does she have that I don't?". I eventually found out that she was "filled with the Holy Spirit". I had been taught in the church I was going to that being filled with the Spirit was not for these days and that speaking in tongues was of the devil. Since God had told me to trust Him and His Word, I began to search the scriptures and seek His face regarding this issue. It became clear to me that being filled with the Holy Spirit was exactly what God wants. Every evening, on my knees, I sought the Lord for this baptism. One evening, while I was all alone in my house.....the Holy Spirit came upon me and I began speaking in the language of the Holy Spirit!!
Life since that time has been quite a journey. Not the bed of roses that some would say; but an every day process of learning who He is and what He wants from us. His love for us is beyond understanding and His faithfulness, even when we are not, is amazing! I never tire of His Word nor am I bored with life in Him. My prayer is that others would know of His goodness and His sacrifice to bring us into a right relationship with the Father. As an old hymn says, "Jesus paid it all. All to Him we owe. Sin had left a crimson stain; He washed it white as snow".
